European Union Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States
The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals working on combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on figures that were central to campaigns to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the decision.
The bans were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
The DSA is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities argue the regulations are essential to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.
